Healing Haven: Somatic Room
Where the Body Begins to Heal
Trauma lives in the body as much as the memories, so healing has to reach both.
What Is the Healing Haven Somatic Room?
Some wounds live too deep for words to reach. The Healing Haven Somatic Room is a dedicated space at The Healing Cottage of the CSRA where the body is finally given permission to be part of the healing.
Trauma is not only stored in memory, but it also lives in the body. It shows up as chronic tension, a racing heart, shallow breathing, a startle response that will not settle, or a sense of being frozen even when the danger is long past. Talk-based counseling helps you understand what happened. Somatic work helps your nervous system finally let go of it.
The Healing Haven is a carefully curated physical space designed to feel safe, calm, and grounding from the moment you walk in. It is also a clinical approach, an intentional, body-first framework for trauma processing that works alongside and beneath the cognitive work you may already be doing.
What Happens in a Somatic Session?
Every somatic session is paced to your nervous system, not a protocol. Depending on where you are and what your body needs, sessions may include:
Grounding and body awareness exercises that help you feel safe in your own skin
Breathwork to regulate the autonomic nervous system and move out of survival mode
Somatic Experiencing techniques that gently track and release trauma held in the body
Interoception, learning to notice and interpret your body's internal signals rather than fear them
Movement-based approaches that help complete the body's natural stress response cycles
EMDR with somatic attunement, integrating bilateral stimulation with body awareness for deeper processing
Coming Soon — Myofascial Massage
The Healing Haven Somatic Room will soon offer Myofascial Massage by a Licensed Massage Therapist, bringing hands-on bodywork into the healing process. Myofascial release works with the body's connective tissue to release physical patterns of holding, bracing, and guarding that form in response to trauma. This addition makes The Healing Cottage one of the few counseling practices in the CSRA to offer truly integrated body-mind-spirit trauma care under one roof.
Who Can the Somatic Room Help?
The Healing Haven is for anyone who has done the talking and still feels stuck. For those whose body holds something their mind cannot fully name. For those who startle easily, feel disconnected from their body, carry chronic physical tension, or find that stress lives somewhere they cannot think their way out of.
You were not made to carry this in your body forever. The Healing Haven Somatic Room exists because healing was always meant to reach this deep.
What Does It Feel Like to Be in the Room?
Not every session looks the same, and that is by design. Each person is a unique creation and requires a unique healing plan. Sometimes healing sounds like breathwork and guided body awareness. Sometimes it looks like painting, coloring, or working with your hands while your nervous system quietly does what it could not do under pressure.
Creative and calming activities are woven into the Healing Haven intentionally, because sometimes the body needs to settle before it can release.
Somatic work can stand on its own, but at The Healing Cottage it is most often part of something larger, a whole-person plan of care that addresses body, mind, and spirit together. No single modality reaches every layer of who you are. Healing was never meant to happen in just one room or in just one way.
We move within your window of tolerance, and you remain in control of your own healing.
You only have to be willing to notice what your body is holding. The rest we figure out together.
Is the Somatic Room Right for Me?
If you feel disconnected from your body, almost like you live from the neck up, and your physical self is somewhere far away.
If stress or panic shows up as a racing heart, tight chest, or shallow breath before you even realize you are upset.
If you have done the inner work, sat with the hard things, talked it through and still feel tense, unsettled, and on edge.
The Somatic Room may be exactly what you have been looking for. It is not about pushing through. It is not about adding one more thing to an already exhausting healing journey.
It is about finally giving your body permission to feel safe again, and discovering that when the body settles, everything else begins to shift.
Is Somatic Work Biblically Sound?
This is a question worth asking, and it deserves a thoughtful answer.
"I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." Psalm 139:14
You were not accidentally put together. Body and spirit are intentionally joined, each part of you known and valued by the One who made you. Caring for your body is not separate from caring for your soul. It is part of honoring the same Creator.
"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
The body is not a burden to be managed or a problem to be overcome. It is a dwelling place. It is sacred, worth tending, worth healing.
"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:18
God does not tend only to the mind. He draws near to the whole person, He draw near to grief that lives in the chest, to fear that tightens the throat, to the weight that settles in the shoulders. He meets us where the body holds what words cannot carry.
"For in Him we live and move and have our being." Acts 17:28
Even our breath. Even our nervous system. Even the way our body moves through the world. All of it held within God.
Somatic work is not a belief system. It does not ask you to adopt any particular worldview or set aside your faith. It simply acknowledges what Scripture has always said ... that you are a whole person, and that healing was always meant to reach every part of you.
At The Healing Cottage, somatic work is offered as something that can be integrated naturally alongside prayer, Scripture, and your relationship with God.
You do not have to choose between caring for your body and honoring your faith. They were never meant to be separated.
